Bus
The cheapest way of getting about in the Capital City Area is to make use of the public transportation system. The bus company Strætó bs. runs busses every 15 - 30 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes during weekends and evenings. A single bus trip for teenagers until the age of 18 is kr. 100, for adults it’s ISK 280. Always remember to ask for a transfer ticket (skiptimíði). This ticket is valid for 60 – 70 min and entitles you to another free bus trip within the time printed on the ticket.
Recently, a new offer was introduced: the “Blue Card”. This card is valid for a period of 9 months and can be purchased for kr. 30,500. There are bus connections between Reykjavík, Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær, Mosfellsbær, Seltjarnarnes and Álftanes. For more information see www.bus.is
In the Northern part of Iceland another bus connection runs between Akureyri – Myvatn – Egilsstadir. A bus schedule can be found here: http://www.nat.is/travelguideeng/bus_stop_akureyri_egilsstadir.htm
Bus fares in Akureyri itself are free. 7 routes are running through Akureyri from 06.25 to 23.03 on working days and from 12:16 to 18:03 on weekends.
