Libraries (bókasöfn) are open to everyone. They operate under the Public Lending Libraries Act and their mission is to provide equal access to information, knowledge and entertainment. There are libraries in all communities around the capital area.
Libraries have a wide selection of books and periodicals in Icelandic and several foreign languages. For instance the Kópavogur library is the main lending library for Russian books. At all libraries there is access to the Internet and to databases of Icelandic and foreign libraries. Furthermore, a selection of encyclopaedias, dictionaries, newspapers and other reference materials are available for on-site use.
Libraries are often centres where the community gathers. Thus, paying a visit to your local library is a good way to find out what is going on in your neighbourhood. Be sure to go to your local library, ask for a card and find out what is available in your language.
In general, books and other materials are only lent to people who are domiciled in Iceland and have a library card. Visitors and tourists are welcome to use the reference sections, reading rooms and computers.
